About the Hospital

Igogwe hospital was established in 1962 by the Fransiscan sisters from The Netherlands and Germany. Since 2004, the hospital has been under the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya. The hospital is located in Rungwe district, Mbeya region, Tanzania. The official catchment is Ukukwe division which comprises of 12 wards namely Kinyala, Swaya, Isongole, Ndanto, Kiwira, Nkunga, Kyimo, Ikuti, Lufingo, Lupepo, Iponjola and Ibighi (Katumba).

Mwambani Mission Hospital
About the Hospital

Introduction

Mwambani Mission Hospital is a Council Designated Hospital (CDH) owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya, functioning under Archbishop Most. Rev. Gervas John Mwasikwabhila Nyaisonga and Auxiliary Bishop Right. Rev. Godfrey Jackson Mwasekaga. It provides health services at the level of district hospital with a bed capacity of 170 beds. Officially registered in 1997 under the Private Hospitals Act, the hospital is managed by the Diocesan medical board and Hospital Board, with daily operations overseen by the Senior Hospital Management Team.

Organization History

Founded by Franciscan Sisters of Denekamp (Netherlands) and Thuine (Germany) in 1968, the hospital was inaugurated in 1972 by Hon. Alli Hassan Mwinyi, then Minister for Health. It became the Designated District Hospital for Chunya District, later transitioning to Voluntary Agency Hospital (2008–2017), and in 2018 signed a Service Agreement to function as the Council Designated Hospital of Songwe District.

Location

The hospital is located in Songwe District Council, 113 km from Mbeya diocesan headquarters and 170 km from Vwawa town, the regional headquarters.

Hospital Catchment Area

The hospital serves the entire Songwe District Council, covering 2 divisions, 18 wards, and 43 villages. Services extend to neighboring districts including Chunya, Mbeya Rural, Momba, and Mbozi, serving a population of 229,129 people (2022 Census).
